Rediscovering Wrestling Magazines from the '80s

The land of armbars, elbow drops, leg locks, Bear Hugs. mean mugs manic factions, Russians, Sheiks and British bulldogs, WWF was my wrestling programming of choice. The most accessible for me.

I loved to see NWA, AWA, UWF and WCCW programming but it was hard to find in my area.

An aunt had cable so I was able to catch a good amount of NWA when we’d visit her on Saturdays. As mom did laundry I would find wrestling on TV. There was a 2 hour slot on TBS from 5-7. It was fun seeing rare wrestling.

I was reading about some old school wrestlers a bit ago. The article was giving the Timeline of the AWA title, Some of the information didn't correspond with my memory. Did Rick Martel lose to Stan Hanson in “ “ year?

I wasn't watching wrestling at that time, how would I know anything about that?

That's when it hit me I learned all that info from the wrestling magazines I used to collect. Why did I get rid of them? I’ve thrown so many things out over the years. Moving from place to place you get tired of hauling things you don't use anymore.

I don't remember throwing them out though. I just haven't seen them since the early 90s.

My mother just received a lot of boxes from her storage. I would be flying out to see her in a matter of days but I couldn't help but send a message asking if she'd come across any wrestling magazines.

She responded almost immediately with a picture saying she opened a box with Nintendo and “I think” wrestling mags.

Okay that makes sense! Of course I hadn’t thrown them out. There are some that made the journey! What kind of shape would they be in? In 1986 my bedroom wall was covered with wrestling posters.

Unfortunately I had taken them out of the magazines which meant stripping the staples that held the pages together.
